Group 5 Course Offering: Overwater Survival Course
Group 5 will be hosting an Overwater Survival course on Saturday, April 5th beginning precisely at 0900 hrs. and which will conclude by mid-afternoon.

This course is required of all crew members who are, or plan to be, participating in an extended overwater flight or sortie.
This course will teach techniques to increase the chances of survival if a plane ditches into water and includes classroom instruction and practical demonstrations.
Classroom instruction
- Reviews the Overwater Survival Course slide presentation
- Discusses how to create a survival kit
- Discusses emergency signaling devices, such as rescue streamers, dye packs, and flares
- Discusses the Beaufort and Douglas Sea Scales
- Demonstrates how to use and test a personal flotation device (PFD)
- Discusses how to orient flight crew members to aircraft exits
- Discusses the advantages and disadvantages of boots, shoes, and flight suits
Practical demonstrations
- Practicing skills in a pool while wearing a flight suit, shoes, and a PFD
The CAP prioritizes safety, and the techniques taught in the Overwater Survival course are expected to increase the chances of survival in the event of a ditching by 88%.
Please ensure that you receive Commander’s Approval in WMIRS (if this is your first time taking this course) and also complete the OWS course found in ABSORB.
You must bring a copy of your certificate verifying your completion of the on-line training to class on the 5th.
If either of these prerequisites are not completed you will not be allowed to take the class.
